Question for: Wednesday May 29 2013
How many earthworms are there in a pound of worms?
ANSWER: Between 150 and 1,000. It really depends on the species.
The first picture is of the common “red wiggler” and they range from 900 to 1,000 per pound. The second is sometimes refereed to as the blue worm or traveling worm and they range form 400-600 per pound. The last picture is of the Amynthas gracilis also known as the Georgia Jumper which range from 150 – 300 per pound.
Be cautious that when you buy a pound of worms you should be receiving a pound of worms, not a pound of worm and bedding. Be aware and know your farmer / worm grower to ensure that you are paying and getting a pound of worms with bedding.
