Question of the Day
Answer for Sunday June 9, 2013
Question: What is the best thing you can add to your all natural garden to make it grow bigger, happier, produce more, keep the bad bugs away, and keep the weeds down?
ANSWER: Compost and or Mulch!
Compost: the allowing of microbes to recycle and break down piled organic material into a natural substance that plants can easily take up as their nutrients. This organic material includes but is not limited to kitchen scraps, leaves, branches, twigs and grass clippings. There are two main ways to produce compost aerobic and anaerobic. The first is through routinely turning the pile forcing air into the pile (aerobic). This creates heat that kills of weed seeds and pathogens and breaks down the organic material. The other method is by leaving the pile alone (anaerobic) and allowing a different (and often stinky) bacteria to break down the material. Each have their positive and negatives, yet they each create organic matter that is a necessity to natural farming
Mulch: is placing organic matter on the top surface in order to prevent weeds, protect against drought and provide protection to microbes. This differs from composting in that you don’t allow the material to “heat” up like the inside of a pile of compost. Be careful, the plant roots on the surface are sensitive and can burn if the mulch is too thick of really green organic material.
