Question of the Day

Answer for June 2, 2013

Question: I pulled this out of the compost pile, what is this white stuff that is on top of decomposing organic material?? Is it bad or good to have?

ANSWER: This is fungi, mycellium or IMO (indigenous micro organisms)! It is helping break down the woody material in the bin. As it breaks down the organic matter, it stores the nutrients with in until it either dies, or trades them with another plant.

It is great for the garden but even better for trees and hardy perennials.  It takes over 100,000 individual fungal strands known as hypae to link together for us to see it with the naked eye! So this is just amazing. In Hawaii, were lucky to see it as often as we do, there are places around the world that have a hard time even cultivating it!
