Is your soil good enough to plant?

Simple Soil Test

Good soil structure will have clumps that will easily break apart. The clumps is a sign of bacteria and fungus holding your soil particles together. The clumps give your plants roots something to hold onto and allow them to stand up straight. When lightly tossed, your soil should break apart into smaller clumps. If it doesn’t then it is too hard for your plants roots to go through.

Here is a very simple and easy to do test to determine if you have a soil that has decent enough structure to support plant life.

1. Pick up a clump of your soil.

– if your soil doesn’t clump at all (like sand) then it has poor structure. Add organic matter, compost and mulch.

2. Break up your clump into hand size pieces

– if your soil doesn’t break apart easily like hard clay than it has poor structure. Add organic matter, compost and mulch.

3. Toss lightly your remainder soil clumps, letting them lightly hit your hands

-if your soil doesn’t break up into chunks easily like rocks or hard clay you have poor structure. Add organic matter, compost and mulch

Here is a very short video of the soil test-
